About Malta Hire Cost
Why this site exists
Malta Hire Cost started from a question I kept running into while helping small businesses in Malta with their websites: business owners could tell me the salary they wanted to offer, but not what it actually cost them once social security, the maternity fund levy and the statutory bonus were added. The gap between the number in a job ad and the number that leaves the business account is rarely explained anywhere in plain terms, so I built a calculator that does the arithmetic in one place, and wrote the guides on this site to cover the questions the calculator alone can't answer.
How the rates are sourced
Every figure used on this site — income tax bands, Class 1 social security rates, the Maternity Leave Trust Fund levy, the statutory bonus instalments and the cost-of-living adjustment — is drawn from the Malta Tax & Customs Administration's published tax tables, the Commissioner for Revenue's Class 1 social security schedule, and the Department for Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER)'s statutory bonus and minimum wage rules for the current year. Rates are reviewed and, where needed, updated every January when Malta's new cost-of-living adjustment and tax tables take effect.
What this site is not
This is a planning tool, not a substitute for professional advice. The calculator and guides are built to give an accurate, fast estimate for a standard full-time or part-time employee aged 18 or over. They do not cover every edge case — sector-specific Wage Regulation Orders, fringe benefits, overtime, and individual tax circumstances can all change the real number. Before signing a contract or running your first payroll, confirm the figures with a qualified Maltese payroll accountant. Full detail is in the legal notice.
